Executive Director, NorthWest Initiative, Lansing

What is the history/purpose of your organization, in one sentence?

The NorthWest Initiative is a nonprofit community development organization working to improve the overall health of the community and quality of life for residents in northwest Lansing.

What drives your passion for neighborhood / community and economic development?

I’ve had the opportunity to live in and travel to some of the most beautiful cities in the world and have a good understanding of what makes a “great” city (one which is a highly desirable destination point or place to reside for individuals). My goal was to come back to Michigan and help to further develop the communities in which I resided, taking some of the best concepts that I’ve seen from other large and small metropolitan areas while maintaining the “small city atmosphere” that has been my major attraction.

Why do you love Michigan?

To be honest, I only love Michigan in the fall… just joking! I love Michigan because we get to experience each of the four seasons, have some of the most beautiful landscapes, great cities to visit, wonderful people, and most importantly, we are surrounded by the magnificent Great Lakes!

How do your family and/or community inspire your work?

I’m inspired to do what I do simply because my family and friends live here and I want the best for them now and into the future.

What do you do in your free time (if it exists!)?

I spend most of my days/nights working and taking care of my family. In my limited personal free time, I enjoy cooking – especially in the fall and winter, sewing, reading, traveling and getting my monthly pedicure!
