Community Investment Relationship Manager, Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis, Okemos

What is the history/purpose of your organization, in one sentence?

The Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis (FHLBI) is a federally-chartered, privately-capitalized cooperative bank owned by its member financial institutions (banks, credit unions and insurance companies chartered in the states of Indiana and Michigan), created as part of the Federal Home Loan Bank (FHLB) system in 1932 to provide a stable source of funding for banks to assure the availability of credit for home mortgages. In 1989, the FHLBs began providing grants for affordable housing, awarding 10% of their annual income each year, and in 2010, approximately $14.5 million will be awarded by FHLBI to member institutions to support affordable housing in Indiana and Michigan.

What drives your passion for neighborhood/community and economic development?

I like to see the results of partnerships between local housing groups, service agencies and funding sources like lenders, MSHDA, FHLBI, and HUD. It’s like a giant puzzle that takes time and effort, but the housing and its local impact is well worth it.

Why do you love Michigan?

What’s not to love? It’s beautiful, minimal natural disasters, great diversity, many recreational and cultural activities, good balance of urban and rural communities, and plenty of opportunities to make a difference.

How do your family and/or community inspire your work?

I want to see Michigan communities stronger and more desirable as places to live and raise a family. I’m a big supporter of revitalizing our cities and encouraging walkable and vibrant neighborhoods. The reality is I currently live in a suburb because of the desirability of the school system.

What do you do in your free time (if it exists!)?

I love to read, garden, and spend time with family and friends.
