Michigan Conference on Affordable Housing WRAP-UP
Conference, CEDAM Annual Event, Advocacy Day - all a success!
Last week, over 1700 people gathered at the Lansing Center for Michigan's Conference on Affordable Housing!
  • Monday's lunch keynote speaker was Jim Wallis - listen to the coverage from Michigan Now radio (courtesy of Chris McCarus).
  • Tuesday's lunch included the annual Conference Awards Ceremony. Award winners included CEDAM members Council for World Class Communities and Cornerstone Alliance (both from Benton Harbor), awarded the Community Developers of the Year Award for their part in the Harbor Shores development, and the NCCS Center for Nonprofit Housing from Fremont, awarded the Innovators of the Year Award for their work fighting rural foreclosure.
  • Also awarded were:
    • Dan Kildee and the Genesee County Land Bank (CED Advocate of the Year)
    • Robert Burgess of Chemical Bank in Midland (FHLBI Community Spirit Award)
    • Darryl Domke of the Michigan Home Ownership Coalition (Corrie Bair Building Inclusive Communities Award)
    • Ms. Neoki Davis of West Michigan Therapy (Julie Sandorf Award)
    • Autumn Kocas and Charlie Wallace of Otter Lake in Lapeer County (Michigan Home Ownership Achievement Award)
    • Melvin Washington, President of Phoenix Communities and Castle Construction (Terrence R. Duvernay Award)
    • and a special award for Representative Steve Tobocman, thanking him for his commitment to the affordable housing and community development industry during his 6 years in office.
CEDAM's Annual Event, this year celebrating CEDAM's 10th Anniversary, had over 200 attendees and was a fun (albeit a bit chilly!) and enjoyable time.

Mark JansenAdvocacy Day for the Living in Michigan Campaign, part of Wednesday's Lunch on the Lawnevent, had over 1200 people! Speakers included:
  • Senator Mark Jansen (R - Grand Rapids)
  • Senator Martha Scott (D - Detroit)
  • Represenative John Proos (R - St. Joseph)
  • Representative Steve Tobocman (D - Detroit)
  • Dan Kildee (Genesee County Land Bank)
  • Mark McDaniel (Great Lakes Capital Fund)
  • and Ken Bensen (Habitat for Humanity of Michigan).
Following Advocacy Day:
  • Michigan Senate Committee on Economic Development and Regulatory Reform held a hearing and gave approval to changes to legislation (sponsored by Senator Jansen) giving more flexibility and an expansion of the Michigan Housing and Community Development Fund to include financing of developments in downtown areas and adjacent neighborhoods. Information regarding the NOFA and Application for Funding will be coming out sometime during the month of May.

  • Special guest Jeff Daniels performed a set of songs about Michigan - listen to the coverage from Michigan Now Radio (McCarus).

Head of Small Business Association named as New Director for HUD

Steven C. Preston, the head of the Small Business Administration, was nominated by President Bush in late April to take over the Department of Housing and
Urban Development. Preston would take over from Alphonso Jackson, a longtime Bush ally who resigned following allegations of favoritism in his dealings with a
Philadelphia developer and criticism of his response to the crisis in the housing industry.

Bush chose Preston, a former investment banker with Lehman Brothers, because
of his background in finance, the official said, referring to him as "a
problem solver who knows how to tackle complex challenges." Reactions have been mixed - Read more

The Urban Institute has released
two reports on Artist Live/Work spaces - one on development and one on financing. An excellent case study in Michigan is the "Division Avenue of the Arts" project that has been in progress for the last few years by Dwelling Place of Grand Rapids.

Department for Health and Human Services - Administration for Children and Families: Grants available to provide technical and financial assistance for community economic development activities designed to address the economic needs of low-income individuals and families through the creation of employment and business opportunities - May 22 is the deadline.
