Victory for Michigan's Housing and Community Development Fund!

After many years of advocacy to fund the MHCDF, approximately $2.1 million for the fund is almost secured! The DLEG Conference Committee reported out $2.163 million for the MHCDF. The budget bill is now awaiting a signature from the Governor to finalize the deal.

Thanks to all of you and the
Living in Michigan Coalition members who have worked so hard to get the MHCDF funded.

We will continue to advocate to reach the goal of $100 million for the fund, but this is a great start--

Congratulations!

Budget Deal in Place

Countdown for Michigan's FY 2008 budgetEarly this morning a deal was struck between the Legislature and the Governor that includes $750 million more spending than last year to pay outstanding debts and $433.55 million in budget cuts. The last three budgets that were being worked on were the General Government, Department of Human Services, and Department of Transportation. However, once the last main issue of privatizing services for foster children and juvenile offenders in the DHS budget was resolved, the other two were quickly resolved. The 17 budget bills now await the Governor's signature.

H.R. 3915: The Mortgage Reform and Anti-Predatory Lending Act of 2007

On October 22nd, Representatives Brad Miller (D-NC), Mel Watt (D-NC), and Barney Frank (D-MA) introduced legislation at the national level to curb predatory lending practinces in mortgage lending and to provide protections to both consumers and investors.

The bill will reform mortgage practices in three main areas:

  • It will establish a federal duty of care, prohibit steering, and require licensing and registration of mortgage originators, which includes brokers and bank loan officers.
  • Also, it will set a minimum standard for all mortgages that state that borrowers must have reasonable ability to repay the mortgage loan.
  • Finally, it will expand protections for high-cost loan consumers and includes protections for renters of foreclosed homes.
