QAP
Forum in Flint on August 30
CEDAM is hosting a dialogue with
MSHDA staff and our members on Thursday, August 30th, at
3:00PM at the Holiday Inn
Gateway in Flint to discuss proposed changes to
the QAP in advance of public hearings in September. When
the new QAP is released (in the next few weeks), CEDAM will
prepare an analysis comparing it to the existing QAP and
identifying whether/where it responds to recent CEDAM recommendations
for improvement. Please join us in Flint or contact Angie Gaabo for more
information.
Detroit Revival
Directly Linked with
Preservation
In the July 28th edition of the Detroit
Free Press, editorialist John Gallagher said, "Preservation is
bankable, realistic, widely accepted - and key to the revival
of Detroit." In his article, he noted the
renovation of older office buildings for new hip downtown
lofts, and the historic preservation of Detroit classic
architecture like the Detroit Opera House, the Gem Theatre,
and Orchestra Hall, as well as neighborhoods like the Eastern Market, Harmonie Park, and Capitol
Park.
Furthering the spirit of preservation in
Detroit, Crains Detroit is
hosting the Ultimate Detroit House
Party on Thursday, September 20. This networking event
will feature 40 historic and new homes along Woodward Avenue,
celebrating Detroit's neighborhoods and the 200th
anniversary of Woodward.

on public input -- in metro areas across the country,
Fregonese and Calthorpe Associates co-founder John Fregonese
is ready for the same task in the Grand Traverse Bay region,
as part of a just-signed $1.3 million, two-year contract with
its intergovernmental TC-TALUS planning agency and the

National Housing Trust Fund Moves Out of
Committee
Tuesday, July 31, was a momentous day for
the National Housing Trust Fund Campaign. For the first time
since the campaign began in 2001, legislation (HR 2895)
to establish a National Housing Trust Fund was successfully
moved out of committee. Full House consideration of the bill
is expected in September. To-date, only ONE Michigan
legislator (Congressman Kildee) has signed on as a co-sponsor.
Please contact your US
Representative and urge them to co-sponsor this bill (supporting materials
are
available).
New Study on Rural Nonprofits
Released
Grantmakers' perceptions of rural life,
geographical isolation, and capacity-building needs greatly
reduce the ability of rural nonprofits to secure funding, a new report from the National Committee for
Responsive Philanthropy finds.
HUD Launches Nationwide Green Building
Initiative
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
has launched a nationwide pilot
program to use "green building" principles
to rehabilitate properties within HUD s Section 8
portfolio. Specifically, the program will offer modest
green building incentives to owners and purchasers
of properties in the Mark-to-Market Program. Since 1997,
HUD's Office of Affordable Housing Preservation has
restructured over 1,600 privately-owned, Section
8-subsidized multifamily properties. Under
M2M, properties are rehabilitated and debt resized to
account for market rent levels. Eligible property owners
can apply for incentives to perform rehabilitation and
maintenance using green building principles and
to collect ongoing data on how green retrofits impact
utility consumption and indoor air
quality. |
